10 years ago, Hostwriter launched its collaborative platform for journalists – and in 2021 we embarked on an exciting journey launching our cross-border newsroom Unbias The News. Our goal was clear: to establish an international newsroom with a mission to create a more equitable and inclusive world of journalism. 

As we mark this double milestone, we’re reminded of the importance of our mission. In a world where misinformation is rampant, and many voices still go unheard, we continue to push forward, committed to creating the world of journalism we believe in—one that is collaborative, diverse, and rooted in the principles of fairness and equity.

Our journey over the past years has been made possible by the incredible support of our community. Whether you’ve contributed a story, shared our work, connected across borders, or simply believed in our mission, you’ve played a crucial role in helping us get to where we are today. What Does Pro-Democracy Election Coverage Look Like in 2024? 

This panel will explore the dual-edged nature of media in these contexts—how it can serve as both a beacon for truth and transparency and a tool for manipulation and control. We will discuss the experiences of journalists in recent election coverage worldwide and draw lessons from how media operates in this context.

The session will delve into the importance of free and fair media in supporting democratic processes, the impact of misinformation, and how lessons from the Global South can inform practices in the Global North. Tina Lee, Editor-In-Chief of Unbias The News; Enrique Anarte, LGBTQ+ Reporter of Thomson Reuters Foundation; and Esra Karakaya, Founder of Karakaya Talks, will participate in the discussion, which will be moderated by Gabriela Ramirez, Multimedia Editor of Unbias The News.

This panel is a collaboration with the Display Europe project and will touch upon one of Unbias the News most recent endeavors: The Democracy Playbook, a global cross-border collaborative project highlighting the successful strategies movements and communities have employed to fight for democracy.
