We are happy to announce that our team has just become a little bit bigger! With exciting projects coming up, our new editor Ruby Russell is going to be a great addition to the team and a driving force in bringing impactful stories to the fore.
In the words of one of our CEOs, Mercy Abang: “We are pleased to welcome Ruby Russell to our team of editors. Her extensive experience in storytelling across national newspapers and broadcast media, working with reporters throughout Europe, the Middle East, and Asia brings a wealth of expertise that will enrich our global editorial efforts.
At a time when it’s more important than ever for stories to reflect the diverse realities of today’s world—not just the perspectives within our echo chambers—Ruby’s insights and skills will help us deepen the impact of our reporting and storytelling. She will collaborate closely with our freelance journalists and editorial team to go beyond the headlines, ensuring our work meets the highest standards and brings to light the stories that truly matter. We’re excited to have her on board and look forward to the contributions she’ll make to our mission.”
Ruby has many years of experience working as a publisher, collaborative storyteller, editor and author. Empowered by Unbias the News’s editorial standards of participatory and networked storytelling, she is bubbling with ideas.
Early this year, Ruby published her book Doing It All exploring single motherhood as a nexus of collective care and challenge to patriarchy.
She began her career at Trolley, an independent publisher of photojournalism books, and became sensitive to the way humanitarian crises are viewed through a foreign lens. This inspired her to collaborate on participatory storytelling projects in the UK and North Africa, working to empower local storytellers to own their narratives.
Having moved from London to Berlin, she worked with Associated Reporters Abroad, reporting and editing stories in a cross-border newsroom, before joining Deutsche Welle, where, as an editor on the Global Ideas section, she focused on the environment and globalization.
Ruby has been reporting on the ecological crisis for the last 10 years – which she sees as rooted in the imbalance between productive and reproductive labour. Bringing together this feminist perspective on the climate crisis and her long-standing interest in the stories we tell about migration, Ruby feels that the role of climate and migration editor at Unbias the News had her name written on it. She is looking forward to furthering Unbias the News’ mission to amplify the voices of communities affected by these issues and going beyond western-centric narratives on climate solutions and development.
Welcome, Ruby!

While I´m intruducing Ruby, I might as well introduce myself! My name is Marlene Keller and I´m currently interning at Hostwriter and Unbias the News. I hold a Bachelor´s degree in Media and Communication Studies and Social and Cultural Anthropology. At the intersection of both I´m interested in innovative and equitable journalism. I first encountered Hostwriter and Unbias the News through the research for my thesis “The Local Journalist in International News Reporting”, in which I assessed the deficits of foreign correspondence with an emphasis on stereotypical reporting and the potential for local journalists to offer more nuanced and context-rich stories. With the internship I´m striving to learn how this media critique is put into practice.
I´m looking forward to learn everything about collaborative work and storytelling with this beautiful team and community!
