Following the departure of former MD Mercy Abang, we are delighted to announce that Ruby Russell is taking over as new Managing Director of Hostwriter/Unbias the News as of June.
In 2024, Ruby joined the team as Climate and Migration Editor, bringing a wealth of expertise and a keen focus on the power of storytelling from a range of roles in journalism and beyond. Moving forward, she will be working to more closely integrate the work of Hostwriter and Unbias, with a focus on narrative-building journalism rooted in cross-border collaboration.

Like so many non-profits and independent news organizations, Hostwriter is fighting to fulfill its mission in an extremely challenging funding landscape. The team has undergone a very difficult few months and has been forced to lay off staff. As so many in the non-profit journalism field, Hostwriter and Unbias are fighting to do ever-more important work with ever-fewer resources.
At the same time, both organizations continue to punch above their weight. Unbias has had its most successful year yet, launching a new website and racking up awards nominations for innovative storytelling. The Hostwriter network has reached nearly 8,000 members in over 160 countries, and has been the jumping board for countless opportunities and collaborations for its members.

Hostwriter/Unbias’ next chapter will be shaped not just by the challenges of rebuilding an organization in crisis, but in response to questions posed by an industry-wide crisis.
